Acquiring established businesses

Talon considers acquisitions and ownership interests in companies with an identifiable business model. An initial review looks at customers, commercial performance, obligations, people, operating dependencies and the resources required to maintain or develop the enterprise. Sector appeal alone is not a basis for a transaction.

Business owners may be considering succession, a sale, new capital or an operating partner. Any potential transaction is assessed separately, with financial, legal and other specialist diligence as appropriate. A consulting inquiry does not constitute an offer to invest or acquire.

Developing ventures from the beginning

New businesses require more than an idea and a corporate name. Talon's venture work examines the proposed customer, commercial case, product or service, delivery model, operational requirements and the resources needed before launch.

Businesses across the portfolio operate in different markets, with different obligations and readiness levels. Each is developed under its own brand and circumstances. Talon does not present an unlaunched service as an existing operation.

Developing businesses beyond the initial decision

The work after acquisition or launch includes improving customer delivery, management controls, commercial activity, organizational capacity and the systems needed to run the business. Growth may mean expanding into a market, creating a new offering or strengthening the existing operation.

The same issues arise in companies Talon does not own. Through separately proposed advisory and management engagements, the group can work with outside owners and executives on defined problems while the client retains control of its business.

An advisory relationship does not require a transaction.

Talon also provides paid leadership and growth consulting to independently owned companies. Assignments may involve a focused assessment, recurring executive advice or agreed fractional management responsibilities. Each is governed by a proposal and a separate client agreement.

If specialist implementation is useful, a portfolio company or another provider may be considered under its own arrangement. Advice, ownership and implementation remain distinct.

A conversation is a starting point

An initial inquiry can concern an acquisition, a new business idea, a management question or a growth challenge. Describe the business, the decision at hand and the kind of working relationship being considered. Confidential records can be discussed through a suitable channel after initial contact.
